A simple and delicious recipe for homemade bagels using your bread machine. Soft and chewy bagels, perfectly risen every time.

Do you have a bread machine that you haven’t used in a while? Its time to dig it out and make some delicious homemade bagels. So Good, warm and fresh from the oven served with a pat of butter, cream cheese, or my favourite Cinnamon Cream Cheese Butter.
Why Use a Bread Machine?
Using your bread maker makes it easy to create bakery style bagels that are soft and chewy. It is convenient and easy to use for making the perfect bagel dough. Not only does it save you time, but it ensures consistent results every time. In addition to make great homemade bread, I use it to prepare the dough for Bread Machine Pretzels and Bread Machine Donuts.
Key Ingredients You Will Need
- Bread Flour – bread flour has a higher protein content compared to all-purpose flour which helps to achieve the perfect bagel texture.
- Bread Machine Yeast – this yeast is specifically formulated to work well with a bread machine. It doesn’t require proofing and activates quickly ensuring that the dough rises properly.
Tips for Making the Perfect Bagels
- Place the ingredients into the bread machine in the order listed. Do Not Mix!
- Select the dough setting.
- Don’t Skip the Boiling Step: Boiling the bagels before baking gives them their traditional chewy crust.

Does anyone know how I would make these into onion bagels? They are my fav but I have not been able to find them in the stores lately. Thanks!
Kristie, I would try adding 1 tablespoon of dry onion flakes to the dough, or just sprinkle them on top.
I made these and I added 2 teaspoons of Lipton Onion soup dry mix. Turned out great!
Maryann, I just stored them in a plastic ziplock bag. Without any preservatives, they won’t last as long as store bought, so I only keep for a couple of days.
I want to try to make everything bagels, does the topping get put on with the egg wash?
I would brush the egg wash on and then the everything mix before the egg wash dries so it will stick.
what is the difference between bread machine yeast and rapid rise yeast?
I have never found any difference between the two.
do u have a video to show size of balls u should make them into?
Hi Heather, I don’t have a video, but divide the dough into 10-12 even pieces.
Can raisins be addeded and when?
Diana, yes raisins can be added. I would put them in after adding the flour in the bread machine.

susan
Hi Susan, I have a bread machine that makes 3 different sizes of loaves. But as you are just making the dough any size of machine should work.
Can you freeze the dough before shaping and cooking? If so, before or after the rise?
Hi Zoe, I have not tried freezing the dough, so without trying this I can’t really tell you what the outcome would be.
AMAZING bagels. Almost the same at from my local bagel shop, and is super easy. Can’t wait to try again.
Thank you Maya for taking the time to comment and rate my recipe. Glad you enjoyed it.
Have you ever made this with regular all purpose flour instead of bread machine flour?
I have Megan, and they turned out good, just a bit denser.
