Bread Machine Bagels
A simple and delicious recipe for homemade bagels using your bread machine. Soft and chewy bagels, perfectly risen every time.

Do you have a bread machine that you haven’t used in a while? Its time to dig it out and make some delicious homemade bagels. So Good, warm and fresh from the oven served with a pat of butter, cream cheese, or my favourite Cinnamon Cream Cheese Butter.
Why Use a Bread Machine?
Using your bread maker makes it easy to create bakery style bagels that are soft and chewy. It is convenient and easy to use for making the perfect bagel dough. Not only does it save you time, but it ensures consistent results every time. In addition to make great homemade bread, I use it to prepare the dough for Bread Machine Pretzels and Bread Machine Donuts.
Key Ingredients You Will Need
- Bread Flour – bread flour has a higher protein content compared to all-purpose flour which helps to achieve the perfect bagel texture.
- Bread Machine Yeast – this yeast is specifically formulated to work well with a bread machine. It doesn’t require proofing and activates quickly ensuring that the dough rises properly.
Tips for Making the Perfect Bagels
- Place the ingredients into the bread machine in the order listed. Do Not Mix!
- Select the dough setting.
- Don’t Skip the Boiling Step: Boiling the bagels before baking gives them their traditional chewy crust.

Try a Variety of Toppings for Homemade Bagels
Plain bagels are delicious, but if you want some extra flavor, sprinkle the bagels before baking with these ideas.
- sesame seeds
- poppy seeds
- dried minced garlic and onion
- coarse seat salt or kosher salt
- cinnamon sugar
- everything bagel seasoning

First time I’ve ever made bagels and they turned out great! My husband and I loved them. I will be making these again soon to share with friends and family. Thank you for the recipe!
Thank you Amy!!
Delicious and so easy! I can’t believe they turned out perfectly on my first attempt. Thank you for such a simple and straightforward recipe
Thank you! Going to try this week 🙂
First time bagel maker and I’m so glad I made these. Very yummy. Followed exactly as directed. Will definitely make again. Thank you for the great recipe!
thank you Melissa!
Do I do the full dough cycle with the rises so the 1.5 hour cycle? Or just the short dough cycle to simple mix the ingredients, no rise at all?
Hi Renee, I only have one setting on my bread machine. You would do the cycle that allows the dough to rise.
I also had trouble getting my bagels to rise, they tasted great but didn’t rise. I have new yeast and have read through other recipes that call for much more yeast, is 1 teaspoon correct?
Hi Linda, I’m not quite sure why the bagels didn’t raise. Did you use bread machine flour and bread machine yeast? Also if you house is fairly cool, this can affect rising.
That might be it, the taste was great and we ate them anyways, will try again
My second time this week making these bagels. They are delicious!
Awesome Barbara, thanks for trying my recipe!
I found this recipe absolutely delicious and easy To make. My husband just love Tom the bagels! Some of them guard a bit Stale after sitting awhileSo I put them in the steamer for a bit and they were absolutely fabulous
Great recipe! Thank you! I added everything seasoning to 8 and cheese to 4. I The directions were super easy to follow. I am an experienced bread maker but it was my first time making bagels.
I’m on my second attempt. The first one didn’t rise at all and I’m certain it had to do with the water temperature when added to the machine. This time, I used room temp water and they rose slightly. I used the slightly warmed oven trick during the 30 minute rest (because I have a drafty house). They taste good but I wish they would rise a bit more. Regardless, I’m committed to find out the issue by continued testing. 😉 Overall, this is a really, really easy recipe and I appreciate you sharing it.
Hi Nicole, I am wondering if your yeast is old? Are you using bread machine yeast and bread flour?
